Welcome to the Holy Monastery of Saint George Gorgolainis. Pause for a moment beneath the shade of the ancient trees, listen to the babbling water, and breathe in the fresh mountain air. You are standing in one of Crete's most historic and beloved monasteries, built at an altitude of 480 meters at the foot of Mount Psiloritis. The name Gorgolainis signifies one who rushes swiftly to help, while also connecting to the area's abundant springs. Look at the giant plane tree and the centuries-old cypress, designated as natural monuments, as well as the stone Venetian fountain. During the difficult years of the Cretan revolutions, the monastery served as a powerful stronghold for the legendary warlord Michalis Korakas. The people of Asites and surrounding villages always found protection, hospitality, and spiritual refuge here. As you walk through the peaceful courtyards, feel the atmosphere of deep reverence and historic bravery embracing this blessed place.
