Welcome to the Holy Monastery of Agarathos. Take a deep breath and let the tranquility of this place carry you away. You are standing in one of the oldest and most significant monasteries in Crete, which has stood as a vigilant guardian over the Cretan countryside since the 15th century. Its name is derived from the agarathia, the wild pomegranate bush beneath which, according to tradition, the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary was discovered. Look around at the imposing stone walls. Here, during the Venetian period, letters and spirituality flourished, nurturing great figures of Orthodoxy. Yet, Agarathos is not just history; it is the living heart of the local community. For centuries, people from the surrounding villages found refuge, solace, and support here in times of hardship. Today, as you walk through the courtyard among the vines and flowers, feel the sense of reverence preserved timelessly. Pause by the ancient pomegranate tree and listen to the whisper of centuries.
